The Portage boys and girls will play a doubleheader at Mount Aloysius on Wednesday in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.

District 6’s local champions, girls in 1A and boys in 2A, are the only teams in the region to play in the same location as the state playoffs begin Tuesday and Wednesday. The girls will start off against WPIAL fifth-place finisher West Greene at 6 p.m. and the boys – who made it to the PIAA semi-finals last year – will face WPIAL fifth-place finisher Sto-Rox at 6 p.m. 7:30 p.m.

There will be seven teams from the main Mirror coverage area in action on Tuesday.

District 6 Class 1A boys’ champion Bishop Carroll will host District 9’s fourth-placed North Clarion at 7 p.m., but no other area teams will play at their home gym that night.

District 6 boys runner-up 1A Williamsburg will face District 9 third-place finisher Otto-Eldred in Hollidaysburg at 6 p.m. Class 4A District 6 champion Penn Cambria will also stay close to home at Central Cambria High School against WPIAL fifth-place runner-up Deer. Lakes at 7, and the Northern Bedford girls will return to the site of their Class 2A District 5 Championship victory when they face fifth-place WPIAL Shenango at the University of Pittsburgh in Johnstown at 6 p.m.

Three area teams have long road trips on Tuesday.

The Bellwood-Antis girls, third in District 6 2A, head to WPIAL runner-up Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur for a tip at 7 p.m. The Penn Cambria girls, fourth in District 6 Class 3A, will play at WPIAL champion North Catholic at the same time.

District 6 Class 4A runners-up Central Boys travel to Midland to take on WPIAL third-place finisher Lincoln Park.

On Wednesday, there will be eight matches for the Mirror’s central zone, including Portage’s doubleheader.

The girls from Tyrone and Hollidaysburg and the boys from Bishop Guilfoyle will play on their grounds. District 5-6 4A champion Lady Eagles will host WPIAL fourth place Southmoreland at 7 p.m. Girard. Hollidaysburg will host Latrobe, fifth in the WPIAL, at 7 p.m.

The Williamsburg girls, Class 1A runners-up from District 6, will face Ridgway, fourth in District 9, in Claysburg-Kimmel at 7 p.m.

Two teams will make long trips.

The Cambria Heights boys, who finished third in District 6 Class 3A, will face WPIAL runners-up Avonworth at North Allegheny in Wexford at 7.30pm. The girls Bishop Carroll, third in District 6 Class 1A, will travel to Otto-Eldred for a game at 6 p.m.

All of Tuesday’s winners will play in the second round on Friday, and Wednesday’s winners will play on Saturday.
