It looks like Wisconsin Republicans’ obsession with rerunning the 2020 election won’t hurt them in 2022.
Republicans prevailed in the state’s highest-profile local election race on Tuesday, with conservative Waukesha County Judge Maria Lazar beating nominee Judge Lori Kornblum by a double-digit margin for a Court of Justice seat. state appeal.
Lazar touted the approval former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman — who is leading the so-called GOP election “audit” and has repeatedly pushed false claims about the results — as well as Jim Troupis, one of the lawyers Trump’s 2020 elections, and Wisconsin Elections Commissioner Bob Spindell, who was one of Trump’s fake voters.
This race has drawn the most spending and attention from outside groups, with Lazar winning endorsements from the state’s GOP establishment. Kornblum was backed by Democrats and unions. Lazar’s victory gives conservatives another judge in a state with a right-leaning justice system.
the race did not concentrate in the 2020 election – Lazar attacked Kornblum as “a liberal, appointed by Governor Tony Evers to legislate from the bench” in her ads, while her allies linked Kornblum to the Waukesha Christmas Parade mass murder. But it’s a sign that it won’t hurt Republicans too much to be tied to their party’s efforts to overthrow the 2020 presidential election.
She wasn’t the only conservative having a good night in Wisconsin: Republican-aligned candidates swept away three school board races in Waukesha against “critical race theory”.
Conservative candidates who have bet their campaigns on explicit rejections of President Biden’s victory in the state, however, have had more mixed results.
Melinda Eck, a conservative activist who organized a local ‘Stop the Steal’ rally on Jan. 6, won an open seat on the City Council in Green Bay, a city that has been at the center of GOP conspiracy theories about the Washington election. 2020.
But Kelly Ruh, a fake Trump voter, lost reelection as alderwoman for the small town of De Pere on Tuesday by a double-digit margin. Ruh was subpoena by the House Select Committee on Jan. 6 in January, which questioned her about her “role and participation in the alleged voter list.”
And Waukesha Mayor Shawn Reilly won re-election in his Republican-leaning town, even though he quit the GOP in disgust after the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill last year. He defeated an opponent who had promoted the GOP election “audit,” which falsely advanced allegations that there were major issues with the state’s 2020 elections.
Reilly had predicted that his departure from the GOP could destroy his political career.
“It may be the cause of the end of my political career, but I have to say it because I am so upset. I am ashamed to have been a member of the Republican Party and I do not know how I will be able to become a member again,” he said. post on Facebook on January 7, 2021, the day after the riot.
Wisconsin was the swing state for Biden: his win there landed him the White House. And it should also be incredibly competitive this fall, with Democratic Gov. Tony Evers facing a tough re-election campaign and Democrats hoping to defeat Republican Sen. Ron Johnson.
One should not overestimate the results of the spring election with low turnout, and it was a bit of a mixed result. But Tuesday’s result is not a good sign for Democrats in arguably the nation’s most important swing state.
