Putin hosts a late-night chat with Biden

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to speak with President Joe Biden by phone on Thursday evening Russian time after asking for further talks with the US leader ahead of bilateral talks on Jan. 10. The Kremlin said Putin would speak with Biden just before midnight Moscow time at 11:30 pm “The initiative for the conversation was Vladimir Putin’s. The time is completely normal considering the time difference [between the U.S. and Russia]. There are no problems here – once later it has never been a problem for the Russian president, and he is sometimes working very actively at the moment, ”spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. While a spokesperson for the United States National Security Council said the two leaders are expected to discuss “a range of topics,” the Kremlin has made it clear that it wants to discuss the list of demands that the Russia has laid down in the West when it comes to NATO and Ukraine. “In Putin’s opinion, the need has arisen for another telephone conversation which will pave the way for negotiations on the aforementioned subject. [proposals to the U.S.]Peskov said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office signaled that they were also awaiting a word with Biden after his meeting with Putin, with spokesman Serhiy Nikiforov saying on Thursday that it would be a “logical and expected step,” according to UNIAN.
